THE BAY CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT

The function of the Bay City Fire Department is to protect lives and property within the city from fires, natural or man made disasters, medical emergencies, and entrapments. The legal authority to carry out these services comes from the City Charter, city ordinances, and the Michigan Fire Prevention Act, which is Michigan Public Act 207 of 1941, as amended.  Bay City Commission Has Voted to LAY OFF 6 Fire Fighters:

June 29th 2009 -- "Local 116 fighters Union leaders said the  plan to lay off 6 fire fighters will ultimately close Station 5 in the Banks area" and the possibility of effecting the staffing of Station 2  down in the South end of town. With the Commission voting on the budget and getting it pushed trough at the last minute, might have over looked other areas that could have waited until latter. With a 6 to 3 vote, the balanced budget was pushed through with the help of commissioners from the 1st and 2nd wards. All though some moneys were  put back toward the Fire Dept. Budget there is still a short fall in keeping the bottom 6 from getting laid off.

There were many residents from all over the city that attended the meetings and expressed their concerns on the safety of the public, and their family because the cuts in the police and fire dept. budgets. With the failing economy and cuts from the state, this cause the city to tighten the belt and cut across the  board, as they said. But Union's feel that there could be cuts in some areas, like the roof repair at city hall, and taking monies from the general fund and placing that into escrow for the possible GM tax tribunal instead of taking that from the overtime budget of the fire dept.

With help from our brothers and sisters of other locals, and we can not forget the public, We thank all those that helped and voiced their opinions to the Commission.

PR Section

The Bay City Firefighters Local 116 has a long history of being involved with charities both locally and nationally.  Our members are dedicated to helping those in need, and to continuing the generosity of our predecessors.

Sponsorship of local Little Leagues, and other fund raisers to help local charities.

Nationally, we are proud to continue the tradition of firefighters supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association ( MDA.)  Every Labor Day weekend is spent filling the boot for Jerry's Kids, and we remain determined to beat the previous year total.

We would also like to thank New Attitude Fitness & Tanning of Essexville for their donation to Local116, of over 100 Beanie Babies. These small toys will be passed out to kids that have been treated by the Department Personnel.
